Auckland, the "Big Small City"

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, with a population of over 1,3 million people.

Located on the Northern Island, Auckland is the economic, touristic and entertainment centre of New Zealand.

Missing out on Auckland's attractions while in the country, means missing out on about half of what New Zealand is about.

Having almost a third of the country's population, Auckland attracts many people across the country who are seeking for good jobs. There, life standards are the highest and the population grows faster than elsewhere in the country.

The "Big Small City" or "Small Big City" as many call it, Auckland has the looks of a reputable metropolis. Skyscrapers and the Auckland Sky Tower stretch upwards, reflecting the economic power of the country.

After the "Treaty Of Waitangi" was signed in 1840, William Hobson, the governor of New Zealand chose the area as the capital of New Zealand. But, today's Wellington city (then, Port Nicholson) was seen as a more adequate place for an administrative capital and was also attracting more settlers. Wellington became the capital of New Zealand in 1865, but the immigration to Auckland became so intense that it made the city it is today: a rich economic and touristic centre.

Auckland is almost the size of the city of New York, however, it has a much smaller population. People live mostly in small size buildings, in living quarters that are mostly scattered around the central area.

The city stretches over to several islands too, not just the main, Northern Island.

The landscape is covered by green hills, forests, grasslands, houses scattered around, many islands in the blue Pacific Ocean, criss-crossed by numerous ships and private yachts.

Overall, the landscape is beautiful, variated, we advise you to go up to the top of the Auckland Sky Tower and admire the splendid view from there. This, 328 m high tower is the tallest self-supporting structure of the southern hemisphere. It offers an unforgettable view over the city, attracting over 600.000 visitors each year. Observing the city from up there gives you a 360 degree glimpse at the structures below. One can see almost everything down there. The city's buildings are not too large to dwarf the smaller structures, streets, vehicles running below, so take a good luck when you're up there!

There's a casino in the tower and there's also a possibility to do bungee jumping, for those who have too much adrenaline.

The Auckland War Museum, the beautiful Waiheke Island nearby, the Great Barrier Island are among the main attractions that you must see.

While in Auckland, we recommend you to take a cruise around the harbour, you must see the cityscape!
