Tokyo, city of lights

The immense capital of Japan, Tokyo city has well over 27 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area and around 12 million in the central area.

Tokyo is an agglomerated place with over 5.700 people per square km.

The city consist of several sub-cities and major quarters, such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara, Ikebukuro, Mita, Ginza and others.

What's interesting about these places is that each one has its distinguishing atmosphere.

Here are the main attractions, most interesting parts of the city: the Imperial Palace (you can see it from outside, examine the moat around the pagodas), Ginza (Tokyo's main shopping district), the Tokyo Tower (located in the Mita area), Shinjuku (the business district with numerous skyscrapers), Akihabara (the electronic district, this is where you can buy very cheap indigenous electronic products at very low prices!), Shibuya (a shopping district, well known among youngsters), Ikebukuro (northern shopping district), the Bonsai Village in Omiya, the Meiji Jingu Shrine, Sensoji Temple, Shinagawa Aquarium, Tokyo Disneyland, Ueno Park and Zoo.

Tokyo is a cramped city with many thin streets. You will see more rail roads than motorways. Even between city districts, it's more popular to travel by subway or train than car or bus.

Prices on transportation in Japan are very high, be prepared for spending much more than elsewhere in the World.

While in Tokyo, make sure you get a glimpse at most of its famous quarters. The "must see" places are the following...

The Tokyo Tower, 333 m high (that makes it 13 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris), from there you can see a beautiful view of the Japanese metropolis. Another way would be to visit the Metropolitan Government Building, a 45-story skyscraper, but if you want the best view, you must go to the tower, which is as high as you can get.

Akihabara is the electronic district of Tokyo. Here, you'll find lots of "delicious" products at very low prices. What's even better is that you can even negotiate the on the prices, sellers will often let down significant amounts from the original price. In Akihabara, the latest Japanese electronic inventions are right in front of you. Great for gifts too, not just for yourself.

Most of Tokyo consists of living quarters cramped with small houses. Many of these are made of plastic materials and other strange plaques, that you won't see elsewhere in the World. If you're in Tokyo, it's good to wonder around such cramped quarters, it can be a lot of fun, a unique experience. Just be careful so that you don't get lost!

Ginza is Tokyo's main shopping district, here's where ladies wander around and hunt great deals.

Youngsters prefer Shibuya and Shinjuku. These are the most visited places in the Japanese capital. Shibuya is a shopping district, roaming with youngsters, it isn't cheap, but its full of lights and interesting buildings. Don't leave Shibuya out of your list if you're visiting Tokyo! As for Shinjuku: its skyscrapers are most impressive, the shops are very crowded and very expensive.

Ikebukuro shopping district is faraway from the centre of the city, yet worth to check out. Colourful and typically Japanese.

The various temples in Tokyo are also worth to see. You must see at least one pagoda while in Japan or you won't get a taste of old Japanese architecture.

There's more to see in Tokyo than one could remember. When you go to Tokyo, you'll feel like in a beautiful dream!
