Vilnius, city of churches
Vilnius or Wilno in Polish, Wilna in German is Lithuania's capital and the largest city in the country with over 600.000 people. Vilnius is an old cultural city in the Baltics and Central Europe. Hungarian King of Poland, Báthory István (or Stephen Báthory), who was also the Prince of Transsylvania (Transylvania) has established the University of Vilnius in Almae Academia et Universitas Vilnensis Societatis Jesu in 1579. Vilnius is a baroque city with many churches and other religious establishments. Attractions within Vilnius include: Gediminas Tower, Aušros Vartai Street, the Vilnius Cathedral, Saint Anne's Church (roman catholic), Cathedral of the Theotokos (Russian orthodox church), Pilies Street, the Town Hall, the remains of Vilnius' Upper Castle. Also interesting to travelers is the downtown's business district, where several skyscrapers stand. The Old Town of Vilnius is one of the largest ones in Europe. Its main artery is Pilies Street. Another one is Gediminas Avenue, which is Vilnius' main avenue, this one is only partly located in the Old Town, but makes access relatively easy, fast from other parts of the city. Trakai Castle is a beautiful reddish fort located on an island. It's just a short drive away form the city, you can get there by bus. It's a "must see" if you're in Vilnius. Even if it's not inside the city, but in the small town with the same name, just 28 km west of the capital, you mustn't miss it. It is one of the most beautiful, perhaps the most well known attraction of Lithuania. Getting to Vilnius: by air, by road and by rail. Flights should be best, but Vilnius is not a major air travel hub in the area, so it'll be difficult to get there from long distance. However, with connection from Poland, Sweden, Germany, Russia and other countries it's possible. Rail and road systems are not among the best ones in Europe. Travelling from any part of Europe to Vilnius, you'd have to change trains a lot of times, while on the road you'll have to go on many secondary routes, few highways. Prices of hotel reservations are among the most affordable ones in Europe. Vilnius is not an expensive city.
